Soot accumulation and particle meter (PM) sensor
New generation Euro 6 engine vehicles include various emission control systems to comply with environmental norms. These include the particle filter (DPF), AdBlue system and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). Although these systems enable the vehicle to operate cleaner and more efficiently, in some cases they can cause soot accumulation.
What is Soot Deposition?
Soot deposition is the accumulation of unburned particles in the engine or exhaust system during the combustion process. This may cause a decrease in engine performance, an increase in fuel consumption and emission values to exceed the norms.
Why Does It Happen?
Combustion Chamber: Fuel particles that are not fully burned in the combustion chamber may form soot.
EGR: The EGR system sends the exhaust gases back to the combustion chamber, which sometimes causes soot accumulation.
DPF: DPF retains particles in exhaust gases, but can reach saturation over time and cause soot accumulation.
Harms:
Decrease in engine performance.
Decrease in fuel efficiency.
Increase in exhaust emissions.
Decrease in the life of components such as DPF and EGR.
What to Do in Case of Soot Accumulation:
br />The vehicle should be maintained regularly.
When soot accumulation is detected, professional cleaning services should be used.
If necessary, components such as DPF and EGR should be replaced.
How is Soot Accumulation Calculated?
Soot accumulation, OBD It can be controlled via the (On-Board Diagnostics) system. Diagnostic devices can check the amount of accumulated soot and the general condition of the system.
Particle Meter Sensor Malfunction and Error Codes:
When the particle meter sensor malfunctions, the vehicle computer system may produce various error codes. For example:
P24xx: General error codes related to the particle filter.
P2463: DPF – Excessive Soot Accumulation.
